Easy Jicama Fries with Black Truffle Infused Sea Salt

Do you want fries with that? I mean, Jicama fries.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Jicama fries.

A new delight that is sure to satisfy your french fry cravings. And it comes in a variety of flavors. This simple one, with just some salt and pepper is only the first in the Jicama fry series that I am posting.

Let's talk about jicama!

Easy Jicama Fries

Easy Jicama Fries

Jicama is a root vegetable that, when cooked, resembles the texture, and has a slight flavor similar to the potato. That's what makes it so great as a fry! It will fool you a bit though. In order to peel the jicama, you are going to have to use some elbow grease. It doesn't peel nearly as easily as a potato. But, after all the hard work you put into peeling it, this trickster vegetable will actually be fairly soft, sweet, and delightfully crunchy if you bite into it raw. Just don't eat the skin!

So how does a French fry end up on my list of healthy foods that can help you lean out?

First, it's loaded with minerals, vitamin C and some of the vitamins that make up the B Complex group. This means it can help boost the immune system and provide energy. Second, Jicama is a low calorie, high fiber vegetable. More specifically, it has a high amount of the soluble dietary fiber, inulin. This type of fiber is a zero-calorie sweet carb that will not metabolize into a simple sugar, making it great for diabetics and those with insulin resistance. Between this high fiber content and a high water content, weight loss becomes another great benefit.

And you chose this over the fast food version, which certainly helps.

Plus, it's not super high in carbs. Although, when cooked there is a significant change in the carb count, it still works great for low carb diets and high carb diets alike. If you dress it up right, perhaps with some melted cheese and bacon, or dip it in some ranch it can totally become a keto dish.  So with that, I am going to say to go forth and try out some Jicama. Be it in a salad, raw, or cooked up as jicama fries on the side of a grilled turkey burger. Because you know, it is so Jicama!

Prep Time:
10 mins

Cook Time: 1 hr

Additional Time: 0 minutes

Total Time: 1 hr 10 mins

Ingredients

  • 2 Medium Jicamas

  • Black Truffle Infused Sea Salt or Sea Salt

  • Ground Black Pepper

  • Oil for Light Coating

Instructions

  1. Peel Jicamas to remove all skin. Use a knife to so this as needed, as they are tough to peel.

  2. Cut into even sticks or wedges.

  3. Place in bowl. Spray with oil, and season with the salt and pepper to your desired seasoning level.

  4. Place on a crisper or baking tray and put in oven at 375 degrees

  5. Flip fries every 15 minutes or so until they are nicely browned and crisp on the outside, but soft on the inside. May take up to an hour depending on how crowded the tray is and if you are using a crisper or not.

Notes

  • More spread out Jicama will help cook faster.

  • A tray will work fine, if you don't have a crisper. You can also create a mock one but using a rack and placing it over a tray, to allow air to vent beneath it.

  • If you are on a higher fat diet, I recommend pan frying for a few minutes in oil to crisp up the outside a bit more, before placing it into the oven.
